Antioch University in New England offers a variety of degree options associated with dance therapy, among other art forms of therapy and counseling. Students receive hands- on training to enable the best learning experience and many of the student’s works are published internationally. All degrees that the students of AUNE are offered are certified by the American Dance Therapy Association as well.
Some degree options that are offered include: Masters in Art in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling, Masters in Education of Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling, and Post Master’s Certificate of Respecialization in Dance/Movement Therapy. A MA degree includes 62 credit hours and requires three years to finish these credits, but then an extra two and a half to three years are added for clinical training. A MEd course requirements are the same as a MA degree requirements except for the flexibility of the internships. The MEd program only takes five semesters to complete. Lastly, a Post Master’s Certification of Respecialization is a 32 credit hour program and is for someone who has already completed their Masters in the mental health field. This certification can be achieved in two years.
The AUNE dance therapy and counseling degrees are not often talked about, but I find them to be extremely interesting. Dance therapy and counseling require specific training and I think that it’s great to have a large university offering three separate degrees specifically for the field. This article about the requirements of each degree opened my eyes to the hard work and dedication a dance therapy and counseling degree requires. With myself being a dance minor at Berry College, it has definitely opened my eyes to the degrees that are obtainable for a field that I may someday find myself interested in.
